Introduction to Soaring
Do You want to learn how to fly a sailplane?
> Here are some answer to the most common questions we get when it comes to people new to Soaring and those looking to try it out.
Do you offer "Glider Rides"?
> Adirondack Soaring Association is a club dedicated to the art and science of flying sailplanes (gliders), rather than a commercial glider operation. As such, we do not sell glider rides for those simply interested in a one-time flight experience. We are, however, actively interested in helping potential new members experience the joy of soaring. Our goal is to build and maintain an active and safe flying organization with people from Saratoga and the Capital Region. To that end, we offer an introductory flight lesson aimed at encouraging those interested in learning more about the Adirondack Soaring Association and the sport we love.
What kind of plane will I fly?
> The flight will be in one of Adirondack Soaring's two Grob 103 Fiberglass trainers with an FAA certified flight instructor and dual controls.
How long is the intro flight?
> Introductory flights are about 15 - 45 minutes, depending on the weather and thermals, giving you the opportunity to experience first hand the thrill of silent and graceful sailplane flight.
Are there any Size or Weight Limitations?
>Due to the cockpit size and critical weight balance requirements, all pilots and passengers must not exceed a maximum weight of 240 lbs, and exceed a height of approximately 6'-1".
How Much does it cost? >The cost of an introductory lesson is $175. and also includes a 1 day membership to the Adirondack Soaring Association.
How much do Flying lesson cost?
The flight lessons for members of the Adirondack Soaring Association are free. Once you join, the only costs will be your one-time membership fee, monthly dues and the cost of your tow. See the Membership page for more info.
